1. Предлоги времени делятся на две группы:
1) time-when (when something happened): at, in, on, by, during, before, after, between;
2) time-duration (how long something lasted): since, from ... to, up to, until, till, for, while.

Предлоги не ставятся перед словами: last, this, next: last decade, this hour, next week (сравните: in the 80s, at 5 о’clock), а также перед yesterday, tomorrow во фразах типа: yesterday evening, tomorrow night (сравните: in the evening). Night не употребляется со словами this, yesterday (= last night) и today (= tonight).

2. Предлоги места и направления можно разделить на три группы: (от)куда, где и как; наиболее частотны парные предлоги типа вниз — внизу (по принципу пространственной ориентации). Такое деление весьма условно, так как ряд предлогов может входить в разные группы в зависимости от того, в каком контексте рассматриваются предметы и их взаиморасположение, например, over имеет значение «над (где), через (куда)» или in front of — «перед» и «впереди» и т.д.
Предлоги at, in, on (в пространственном значении) имеют целый ряд особенностей употребления (см. Аррendix 2); наиболее общий принцип их использования следующий:
